Bunda: 2 jailed 20 years for killing a zebra

BY CORRESPONDENT

Two people were on Friday sentenced to 20 years in jail each after the Bunda Resident Magistrate Court in Mara Region found them guilty of killing a zebra and for entering the game reserve contrary to the country's laws.

The convicts were Juma Mgikira and Marumbe Thomas, both being residents of Kyandege Village in Bunda District.

It was earlier claimed before the court by the Serengeti National Park lawyer, Emmanuel Zumba, that the accused together on December 9, 2009 at around 11am were arrested within the Grumeti Game Reserve while they had already killed a zebra.

Zumba told the court that the two were found with a motorcycle, traditional weapons including spears that they used to illegally hunt the animals.

Before the sentence was read, the accused requested the court to reduce the sentence claiming that they had big families that depended on them, while one claimed that he was suffering from TB.

However, the Magistrate, Safina Simfukwe sentenced them to 20 years in jail each, saying the sentences should serve as a lesson to others who undertake illegal hunting activities in national parks and reserved games.
