Dar es Salaam. The Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court was yesterday told how the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bahi, Mr Omary Badwel (CCM), intentionally solicited and received a bribe from a senior government official.
This was revealed by an investigating officer from the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Coast Region, Ms Janeth Machurya, when she was testifying before resident magistrate Faizal Kahamba.
In the case, Badwel, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Local Authorities Accounts Committee (LAAC), is charged with soliciting Sh8 million bribe whereas he received Sh1 million as advance from the Mkuranga District executive director, Ms Sipora Liana.
The accused allegedly received the money on June 2 from Ms Liana at Peacock Hotel to induce him to approve the district council’s 2011/12 financial report, which was being discussed by the committee.
Ms Machurya told the court that after the arrest of the accused, they decided to investigate if there was communication between the accused and the complainant a day before the incident.
