Two new judges elected to Africa Human Rights court
BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER
Two newly elected judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights will be sworn in here on Monday.
According to a statement issued here on Wednesday judges to be sworn in are Kenya’s Justice Ben Kioko, and Senegalese Justice El Hadji Guissé.
They were appointed by the 19th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union on 16 July 2012 for a six-year term each.
After the swearing-in ceremony, the Court will proceed with election of the new bureau of the Court, comprising the President and Vice-President of the Court, because the term of the current bureau, composed by Hon Gerard Niyungeko (President from Burundi) and Sophia A. B. Akuffo (Vice-President from Ghana) has expired.
The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Court) is a continental court established by African countries to ensure protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa.
It complements and reinforces the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
