Authorities in Bulambuli District will next month enact a by-law to curb the increasing environmental degradation in the district that has resulted into disasters which have claimed lives and property in the recent past.

The district chairperson, Mr Simon Wananzofu, said the law, which will ensure that every government institution participates in tree planting, is intended to create a sense of responsibility among the citizens to protect the environment.

Mr Wananzofu was speaking at a launch of a tree planting campaign at Buwasheba Primary School where the local government has partnered with Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) as part of efforts to curb effects of landslides in the Mt. Elgon area. URCS has so far provided the district with 50,000 tree seedlings for the campaign.

“In bid to restore the already degraded environment, we have decided to pass a by-law that will compel every government institution, sub-county and home to plant trees and have forests at their respective places of work. These by-laws will be a must for everyone in the district,” Mr Wananzofu said.

The secretary general for Uganda Red Cross Society, Mr Michael Nataka, said all local governments in the country should be directly responsible for financing environmental management activities in their areas of jurisdiction if Uganda is to end environmental degradation.
