Dar es Salaam: Bandits kill two, injure three in daylight robbery

SUSPECTED bandits on Tuesday killed two people including a cashier of a Dar es Salaam-based ARTAN Company, injured three others in an attempt to rob 150mil/-, the property of the company.

The cashier was in the process of taking the money to the bank in the morning.

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Suleiman Kova, told journalists that all the suspects were arrested following joint efforts by the police and ‘wananchi.’

He said the other person killed was shot on the head by one of the suspects as he tried to stone him (the suspect). Mr Kova said the incident occurred at around 10:00 in the morning at Kariakoo area along the Mahiwa/Livingstone Street.

He said as the cashier and a colleague had loaded the money in the boot of a saloon car, three people on a motorcycle surrounded them and ordered them to drive away. However, Mr Kova said the employees refused to obey the order and the suspected bandits shot them and disappeared with the money.

He said the people around and the police on patrol heard the gun shots, went to the scene of the incident and launched a man hunt for the suspects. Within 15 minutes they managed to arrest the first suspect from Congo Street.

The suspect who has been identified as Augustino Kayula (24), who was also found with a pistol (Browning) loaded with one round of ammunition and the Boxer motorcycle used by the suspects with registration number T301 CCW. Five cartridges were found at the scene of the incident.

According to him, the police have not recovered the money. Mr Kova named those killed as the cashier Ahmed Mohammed Issa (55) and Sadick Juma (38), a cart pusher. The injured were identified as Alhaji Mussa, a cart pusher, Salum Athman, a street vendor and Yussuf, the son of the owner of the company.

They were rushed to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) for treatment. Other suspects who were arrested are the company’s watchman Ally Said (42) and two other people who were identified by the owner of the company.
