DAR ES SALAAM: CJ calls on employees in Justice dept to observe ethics in their duties

By Abela Msikula

The Chief Justice, Mr Mohammed Chande, has urged employees in the Justice department to be ethical in performing their duties in order to help members of the public preserve their rights. He was speaking yesterday at the launch of a journal and the biennial general meeting of the Tanzania Women Judges Association (TAWJA). He urged it to continue writing many books on legal issues in order to have sustainable education for all Judiciary workers and the public at large.

“These should not only be books with legal contents and other educational programmes on judicial integrity that will help officers, but also all individuals are supposed to know legal matters. Hence, I urge you to produce more books of this kind,” said the CJ.

He went on to say that the best thing is to identify ethical and integrity performance by judges and magistrates in finishing their cases in time, while openly stating reasons for any specific judgment on cases to the satisfaction of both sides.

Emphasising on ethics and integrity, the TAWJA chairperson, Judge Engella Kileo, said the Judiciary was among organs believed to engage in corruption. She therefore urged personnel in the department to embrace contents in the launched books about eradicating bribery and let justice be accessible to everybody.

“Both the journal and the case law manual address topical issues on access to justice. The work of judicial officer who is above reproach will no doubt ensure maintenance of the rule of law, peace, order and enhancement of democratic development of our nation,” said Judge Kileo.
