KAMPALA: Court temporarily lifts Alaka’s suspension

By  ANTHONY WESAKA

The High Court in Kampala has temporarily lifted the six months suspension slapped against city advocate Caleb Alaka by the disciplinary committee of the Law Council.

This is to allow his substantive application to be heard and determined.

The ruling by Justice Eldad Mwangusya on Tuesday means that Mr Alaka will for now practice his profession until court makes the final ruling on his suit challenging his suspension.

The suspension

The Law Council, the body charged with the mandate of disciplining errant members of the legal profession, had on December 14, last year suspended Mr Alaka from legal practice after his law firm was found guilty of mishandling an election petition. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Shs24 million.

Mr Alaka’s law firm allegedly filed an election petition of one of his clients before a Magistrates Court instead of a High Court, a move which was unbecoming of an advocate.
