Kampala: Court sentences two hackers to 12 years in jail each

The Anti-Corruption Court has sentenced two people to 12 years in jail each for hacking into the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) computer system to defraud government, leading to loss of more than Shs3 billion.

The court also sentenced Guster Nsubuga a businessman working with Cargo Supplies Limited and Farouk Mugere, a clearing agent for Shafa Clearing and Forwarding firm to eight years in jail each for illegally using and intercepting computer services and producing or selling data devices of computer programmes designed to overcome security measures for data protection.

Sentences

The judge said all sentences would run concurrently. Justice Paul Mugamba fined each of the convicts $4500.

The court , however, acquitted Mr Richard Kibalama, an Information and Communication Technology specialist and Mr Patrick Owora, a clearing agent with Shafa Clearing and Forwarding of offences in connection with hacking into the URA computerised system.
