UGANDA: Policeman held over demanding for bribe from suspects
By Denis Edema.
The police in Jinja District have arrested one of their own for allegedly soliciting for a bribe from suspects.
The policeman was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly demanded a Shs100,000 bribe from suspects.
According to the police, the constable was assigned to handle a case in which Mr Hamza Irumba accused two people of causing malicious damage to his property, trespass and removing boundary marks from his land.
The two allegedly committed the offence on December 18, 2012 in Buwagi, Budondo.
According to the police spokesperson for South Eastern Region, Mr Samson Lubega, the suspects were granted police bond, pending further investigations into their case.
The officer, however, reportedly started demanding that they pay him Shs100,000.
The suspects were expected to report back to police on March 11 but did not do so because they had reportedly failed to get them that the constable was demanding.
They came to the police station last Wednesday, but the officer allegedly kept demanding for money.
The suspects then told the constable to give them more time before they reported the matter to the Professional Standard Unit, which provided the money and later arrested and searched the constable, who was found with the marked notes.
The constable is being detained at Nalufenya Police Station.
