US protesters slam lobbyists for preventing tougher gun laws

American protesters have rallied near the White House to slam lobbyists in Washington for preventing tougher gun laws.

During the rally, the protesters revealed the names of the lobbying firms, saying “they have blood on their hands.” The lobbying firms have apparently received large sums by the National Rifle Association (NRA). 

The NRA's political activity is based on the premise that firearm ownership is a civil right protected by the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights. The group has a nearly-century-long record of influencing as well as lobbying for or against proposed firearm legislation on behalf of its members. Observers and lawmakers see the NRA as one of the top three most influential lobbying groups in Washington. 

Every year, more than 30,000 people are killed in firearm-related incidents across the United States. It is estimated that there are as many as 300 million guns in the country. 

Since the massacre of 20 school children and six educators in Connecticut last year, President Barack Obama has been pushing for tougher federal gun laws.
