ZANZIBAR: Violation of road traffic laws on the rise
Written by DAILY NEWS Reporters in Dodoma.
ZANZIBAR is experiencing an increase in the violation of road regulations and the construction of unauthorized road bumps, the House was informed on Friday.
“Violation of traffic laws leads to reckless driving and preventable accidents. There has been a wave of people constructing bumps without involving the Roads department,” said Seif Rashid Suleiman, minister for Infrastructure and Communications.
Answering questions from Mr Jaku Hashim Ayoub (CCM-Muyuni) and Mr Ali Salum Haji (CCM- Kwahani), and Ms Panya Ali Abdallah, the minister asked for patience as his ministry works closely with the police to find ways of managing ‘stubborn’ drivers.
Jaku pressed the government to fix a bump at Bwejuu Road in South Unguja, to minimise accidents, while the Kwahani legislator asked the government to fix road cameras for easy identification of drivers who violate traffic laws.
The deputy minister for Infrastructure and Communication, Mr Issa Haji Ussi, said that idea of fixing traffic cameras would help identify reckless driver, and added, “but unfortunately it is very expensive.
At this time our ministry has no funds for the project, hopefully in the near future.
