KAMPALA: Man convicted for urinating on street

By BETTY NDAGIRE.

A court in Kampala has sentenced a 41-year-old man to two hours of community service or a month in jail for easing himself on a city street.

Mr Ronald Bunjingo yesterday appeared before Grade One Magistrate Julius Borore at City Hall Court and pleaded guilty to being a nuisance when he urinated in a public place.

Prosecution alleged that on March 28 this year near the traffic lights in Wandegeya, a Kampala suburb, Mr Bunjingo was arrested by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) law enforcing agents who found him urinating on the street in contravention of the city’s law and order regulations.

“Your worship, I pray for a lenient sentence because that day I was unwell and since there was no toilet in the proximity, I chose to urinate on the street,” Mr Bunjingo pleaded.

Magistrate Borore said he gave the convict a lenient sentence because he admitted committing the offence.

Speaking to Daily Monitor after his conviction, Mr Bunjingo said he did not know the offence carried a serious punishment, adding that he has learnt a lesson. He opted to do community service instead of going to jail.

Meanwhile, the same court issued criminal summons for local artistes Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and Eddie Kenzo after they failed to show up in court to answer charges of illegally pinning up their posters in the city.

The State alleges that from March 1 to March 30, the duo put up posters advertising their music shows without consent from KCCA.
