Dr Sengondo Mvungi seriously hurt as burglars strike
Constitution Review Commission (CRC) member (and a former law lecturer at UDSM) Dr Sengondo Mvungi is battling for his life at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after six people believed to be armed robbers invaded his house and seriously injured him on the head.
Mvungi who is also NCCR–Mageuzi National Executive Council Member and Law Lecturer at the University of Bagamoyo (UB) was attacked on Saturday at midnight at his residence in Kibamba Msakuzi.
NCCR Chairman James Mbatia told The Guardian at MNH yesterday that Mvungi’s condition is serious due to the deep cuts he sustained on his head.
Mbatia said the first person to be attacked was one of Mvungi’s workers who was then commanded to lead the attackers to Mvungi’s room.
Mbatia said upon hearing noise from outside, Mvungi came out to find out what was going on, only for a machete to land on his head, making a deep cut which left him unconscious.
According to Mbatia Mvungi was rushed to Tumbi Hospital before being referred to MNH.
“Mvungi was then brought to MNH for further treatment. He was supposed to go for x-ray but doctors told us that this cannot show the seriousness of the injuries,” he said, adding that doctors had advised he go for a CT scan, but the operator was not available.
Mvungi was then taken to Aga Khan Hospital for the CT scan and then brought back to MNH where he is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The suspected armed robbers managed to get away with a laptop, pistol and undisclosed sum of money.
Mvungi’s nephew, Deogratius Mwarabu said after attacking Mvungi the suspected robbers entered the victim’s room where they found his wife and ordered her to give them money.
Without mentioning the amount, Mwarabu said the wife gave them some cash but they demanded for more and threatened to kill her if she failed to comply with their order.
“The wife defended herself that that was all the money she had. That is when they started beating her before running away,” he said.
When asked contacted for comment on the incident, Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Camilius Wambura said that they are aware of the incident and that they have started investigations.
“I cannot comment on the matter right now but we are investigating,” he said.
