Uganda: Prison warder sentenced to death
Entebbe
Entebbe High Court yesterday sentenced to death a prison warder attached to Sentema Government Prison in Wakiso District after he was found guilty of killing his wife.
Justice Wilson Musene Masalu said prosecution proved beyond doubt that Emmanuel Drazua killed his wife Erina Amaite. “The findings of the court indicate that it was a clear manifestation that the convict intended to kill the deceased with a AK-47 rifle purporting that his life was in danger since the deceased was armed with a gun,” he said.
Drazua, who was on trial for allegedly killing Amaite on suspicion that she was having an affair with a boda boda cyclist, had in earlier proceedings told court that he killed his wife in self-defence.
However, Justice Masalu said basing on evidence produced by prosecution witnesses at the scene of murder, Drazua’s life wasn’t in danger since the deceased had a gun without bullets in chambers and never put him at a gun point.
The judge said the punishment is to act as a deterrent to perpetrators of murder.
“To make matters worse, the convict used a gun meant to protect lives and property to kill his wife,” he added.
