Uganda: Nebanda’s boyfriend Kalungi arrested

By NELSON WESONGA

Mr Adam Suleiman Kalungi, the alleged boyfriend to the late Cerinah Nebanda, the former Woman Member of Parliament for Butaleja District has been arrested this Friday morning.

According to a press statement by the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, the Kenya Police apprehended Mr Kalungi in Mombasa (Kenya).

The Kenyan authorities later handed over Mr Kalungi to Uganda on Friday at Malaba border post in Tororo District, eastern Uganda.

“At this moment, Adam Suleiman Kalungi is in Uganda Police custody to help us with the ongoing investigations into the death of the late Cerinah Nebanda,” reads the statement.

“He must explain the events and circumstances that led to the death of Hon Nebanda since it was from his home in Buziga in Kampala, that the suspect and his associates took the deceased to Nsambya General Clinic, where she was pronounced.”

The Deputy Police Spokesperson, Vincent Ssekate, who hand-delivered the statement to this newspaper on Friday at 8a.m., told the Daily Monitor Mr Kalungi was arrested between 2a.m. and 3a.m Friday morning.
Mombasa is at least 14 hours by road from Malaba border post.

The government alleges that Mr Kalungi is a “known peddler” of drugs, and that its toxicological tests established there were traces of heroine, cocaine, and alcohol in the fiery legislator’s body.

Parliament, however, dismissed the findings, saying that the initial post-mortem done at Mulago Hospital indicated poison.

Police in December arrested three people, Ali Omara Al-Muzahim, Ibrahim Muhammed, Abdi Rashid-Bott, suspected to be acquaintances of Mr Kalungi.

Members of Parliament Chris Baryomunsi (Kinkiizi West), Muhammad Nsereko (Kampala Central), were also arrested for allegedly interfering with the investigations into death.

They have since been released on police bond. Police also wants to arrest Dr Sam Lyomoki (Workers), Dr Medard Bitekyerezo (Mbarara Municipality), Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga) and Betty Nambooze (Mukono Municipality) for “inciting” the public.
