Court set for Makunga judgment

Dar es Salaam. The Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court is today expected today to deliver judgment in the case against former Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) Group Managing Editor Theophil Makunga and two others.

Mr Makunga is charged along with former Tanzania Daima Managing Editor Absalom Kibanda and Mr Samson Mwigamba with printing and publishing a seditious article in the Kiswahili daily, contrary to the Newspaper Act.

It was alleged that on November 30, 2011, the three as published and printed the article in Tanzania Daima.

The article written by Mr Mwigamba had the headline Waraka maalum kwa askari wote (a special communication to all security forces) and was allegedly approved by Mr Kibanda before being published.

Mr Makunga, who is the third accused in the case, allegedly printed the article which, according to the prosecution, was aimed at inciting disobedience among security forces.
