MCT to arbitrate on complaints against newspaper, radio station

The Ethics Committee of the Media Council of Tanzania will meet in Dar es Salaam on Thursday to arbitrate on two complaints, MCT Executive Secretary Kajubi Mukajanga said in a press statement issued in the city yesterday.

He said the committee’s chairperson, Justice (rtd) Thomas Mihayo, will preside over the hearing of complaints filed by Musoma Rural legislator Nimrod Mkono against Kiswahili weekly newspaper Mawio newspaper and by Karya Temba against Times FM Radio.

Mkono alleges that between October and November 2013 the said newspaper published a series of articles which he claims defamed him. He demands that the paper retract the alleged defamatory contents and apologise.

Temba meanwhile alleges that Times FM Radio’s Mitikisiko ya Pwani programme on September 26, 2013 used derogatory language against him and his career as a musician. He adds the presenter of the said programme had ill intentions and that he (Temba) was not given the right to reply.

Temba demands that the Council censure the radio station and order it to apologise, and that he be given the right to reply on the same programme.
