Dar es Salaam.
The Legal and Human Right Centre (LHRC) has condemned the recent demolition of houses in Madale area saying it did not take into consideration the aspect of human rights.
The exercise followed eviction of people who encroached on plots of land at Madale, Wazo Ward in Dar es Salaam, leaving many of them homeless. Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the LHRC director, Dr Helen Kijjo-Bisimba, said the exercise went on despite the fact that there were cases in court with most scheduled to be heard this week. These include Land cases number 125, 139 and 215 filed on different dates this year.
She claimed that some legally owned houses in the area were demolished by the government under the supervision of the police force, causing loss of properties and injuries to people.
“The action by the government and the police force using excessive force to evict people believed to be encroachers of the area in Wazo without notice was total violation of human rights and constitutional laws governing this country,” declared Dr Bisimba.
She said during the exercise many young people in the area were also arrested. Although they were liable to get bail, she explained, it was not granted to them as they were required to pay Sh50,000.
She asked the government to compensate the victims whose houses were destroyed despite the fact that they were legally owned.
