Violence against women increasing, says WLAC

By the Guardian Reporter

The Women Legal Aid Centre has embarked on a special training programme on how to attend to victims of violence. This comes as violence acts against women is reported by the organisation to be increasing nationwide.

Magdalena Mlolere, a lawyer with WLAC made the remark over the weekend during the two day training organised held in Dar es Salaam and brought together activists from various organisations to take part in the “Tunaweza” campaign that was launched by WLAC as part of the efforts to ‘fight’ violence against women.

Mlolere said that her centre has been receiving a growing large number of women victims. They provide them with legal assistance but she acknowledged that much more had to be done. Giving an overview of the condition in the country she said men too experience violence from their wives but the ratio is very small compared to that of women and this in part due to underreporting of the incidents.

The training focused on building capacity for the activists to learn proper methods and approaches to take when handling victims of violence and fundraising to sustain the campaign.
