Thieves should have their hands cut

Written by JOHN KULEKANA,

Miteja, Kilwa.

SEVERAL residents here called for introduction of sharia law through which thieves will have their hands chopped off and those committing adultery stoned to death.

Speaking at a meeting with members of the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) at Miteja and  Kinjumbi Ujamaa villages, the residents favoured adoption of Islamic laws."Application of sharia laws will end corruption, theft and promiscuity," said Mr Hassan Abdallah Seif, a resident of Miteja village.

Mr Mohamed Kionjo said capital punishment should be maintained. He dismissed demands by human rights activists charging that "anyone who kills must be killed." "Even in the United States those convicted of murder are executed by lethal injection," he said.Mr Abdallah Mselem, and several other villagers, suggested that Fridays be declared as days of prayer and that Muslims should be allowed to stay with their families at home.

Mr Said Mohamed Chibugila pleaded for pension and free health services for all elderly citizens. He said that many senior citizens aged 60 years old and above in rural areas were facing many hardships for lack of money.Mr Nassor Omari and several others suggested that Members of Parliament should serve for maximum of ten years as is the case with the president.

"There are many Tanzanians capable of serving in Parliament. "It is therefore unfair to have people serving in parliament for up to forty years as if they are sultans," he said.
