Two suspects in court today

By Bernard Lugongo, The Citizen Reporter

Dar es Salaam.

Police in the region have confirmed they will bring to court today two suspects alleged to have used the name of former UN deputy secretary-general, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, fraudulently. The suspects, Mr Yusuf Kalala and his wife Sharifa Kalala, are accused of deceiving a clearing and forwarding company, Mokha Agency.

According the company, the two suspects prepared clearing documents with the name of Dr Migiro in showing a container of furniture they imported belonged to her in order to facilitate clearing procedures.

The police investigation officer, Mr Reuben Mwakabonga, said yesterday they had details of the case facing the two suspects. “We have served them with an order to report to the court tomorrow (today) and if they don’t, we will ask the court to issue an arrest warrant,” Mr Mwakabonga said.

Explaining further, the spokesperson of the company, Mr Salim Dawa, told journalists at the weekend that the suspects tendered the company to transport the cargo.

“The company did all efforts to ensure the container arrived in the country and sent to Dr Migiro’s home and used over Sh11 million for transporting the container,” he said.

He said they were not in a hurry to demand payment from Dr Migiro. “After all, we were aware that she will come back to the country as she has already retired from the post as UN secretary-general,” Mr Dawa said.

The general director of the company, Mr Mohamed Lema, insisted they wanted justice to take its course to maintain the company’s credibility to members of the public and it wasn’t ready to see its image being tarnished by dishonest people.
