UGANDA: National Bank of Commerce case, Judges ask for more time

By NICHOLAS KALUNGI

KAMPALA

The Court of Appeal on Monday postponed the hearing of a case between National Bank of Commerce director Mr Humphrey Nzeyi and Bank of Uganda to 26 November 2012.

The adjournment was made after a panel of three judges handling the matter asked for more time to peruse all the case files before the hearing. “The judges said the files were availed to them late and thus needed time to go through them. We have agreed to have the hearing on November 26th,” Mr Fred Muwema, one of the lawyers representing Mr Nzeyi said outside court.

Mr Muwema added: “We are comfortable with the new date because this is a complicated case. It is fair to give the judges more time.” Last month, the central bank took over operations and management of NBC saying the continuation of its activities is detrimental to the interests of its depositors.

Following the takeover, Mr Nzeyi secured an interim order from the Constitutional Court blocking the takeover of NBC until a substantive application challenging the same was heard and disposed of within three months.
