ZAnzibar: Dr Shein picks new Chief Justice

JUDGE Abdulhakim Ameir Issa has been appointed Zanzibar’s Chief Justice, a press statement from Zanzibar’s State House said.

“According to section 94(4) of the Zanzibar constitution of 1984, President Ali Mohammed Shein appoints Abdulhakim Ameir Issa acting Chief Justice of Zanzibar from December 3rd, 2012 to January 14 2013,” the statement reads without giving reasons for the appointment.

However impeccable sources from the State House and the High court, said hat the Zanzibar’s Chief Justice Omar Othman Makungu has left for India for a short course.

Judge Makungu was appointed Zanzibar’s Chief Justice after the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) two years ago, while Ameir is a prominent Judge who led two separate Probe commissions into the Spice Islander, and Mv Skagit marine accidents. Both probe reports blamed irresponsibility as one of the major cause for the fateful marine accidents, proposing owners to be charged and compensating the victims.
