Pretoria prison renamed after hanged man

President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday officially renamed Pretoria Central Prison the Kgosi Mampuru II Management Area.

April was the month of reconciliation and forgiveness, he told guests at the renaming ceremony, according to a copy of his speech.

"Part of that reconciliation includes the renaming of geographic and place names as well as landmarks. 

This is meant to reflect our diverse political and historical heritage and to heal the wounds of the past."

Kgosi Mampuru was hanged on 22 November 1883 in Pretoria Prison for public violence.

Zuma said the new name should create a general feeling of belonging, because it captured the country's history.
