Bad Black case: Lawyer dragged to Law Council

Kampala.

A lawyer has been dragged to the Law Council over alleged professional misconduct in connection with failure to recover funds and properties from jailed socialite Shanita Namuyimbwa aka Bad Black, and her accomplice, Meddie Sentongo, who were convicted of fraud before the Anti-Corruption Court.

In the complaint filed before the disciplinary committee, businessman David Greenhalgh, the proprietor of Daveshan Developments, is seeking disciplinary action against his former lawyer, Mr Fitz Patrick Furah over alleged dubious, unprofessional and fraudulent dealings.

Complainant’s demand

“I further pray that you oblige to order him to refund a total of $453,000 (about Shs1.2 billion) which he fraudulently obtained from me and the company and appropriate action be taken on him under the Uganda professional advocate laws,” reads the complaint pending hearing.

According to the complaint, Mr Greenhalgh instructed Mr Furah to represent his company to recover $3.6 million (about Shs11 billion) from Bad Black and Mr Sentongo after they were convicted of criminal offences before the Kololo-based court.

It is alleged that Mr Furah received $17,800 (about Shs45m) from Mr Greenhalgh to pay tax for release of a motor vehicle said to have been purchased by Bad Black but it was released to another party and the money was never returned.

Lawyer’s defence

However, Mr Furah denies the allegation of instructions and that Mr Greenhalgh did not duly pay his legal fees.

“We also handled all the objector proceedings associated or filed as a result, including all the defendants complaints against the complainant to interalia the Chief Justice. We have been handling all criminal cases against and or associated with the complainant including the Interpol complaint,” he said in his defence.
