Lulu to return to High Court on February 17

BONGO movie actress Elizabeth Michael Kimemeta, alias Lulu, is expected to appear before the High Court on February 17, this year, to enter a plea to the manslaughter charge linked to the killing of her lover, Steven Kanumba, in 2012.

According to his advocate Peter Kibatala, Lulu would appear before Judge Rose Temba. The charge filed against her would be read afresh and she would be required to give her plea on whether she admits or denies involvement.

Court procedure shows that after entering the plea, the matter will be adjourned to another date to wait for a session for the full trial of the case to commence for hearing.

Lulu is charged with murdering without intention a former local movie star Steven Kanumba on April 7, 2012, at Sinza Vatican. Kanumba was said to have been embroiled in a brawl with his girlfriend (Lulu) at his home in Sinza, Dar es Salaam.

Currently, Lulu is out on bail granted to her by the High Court in January last year. Judge Zaiban Mruke gave her bail on four conditions, including securing two sureties, who must be government employees. The two sureties, according to the judge, were required to sign a bond of 20m/- each.

The judge further ordered Lulu to surrender all her travelling documents to the District Registrar of the High Court, Dar es Salaam Registry, and was directed not to leave the city without the permission of the Registrar.

According to the judge, Lulu should report to the Registrar on every first day of each month until final disposal of her case pending before the Court. She could not be released immediately because such conditions were to be verified by the Registrar.

The judge had taken into consideration of an application advanced by Kibatala, who had cited Section 148 (1) (2) of the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA), which gives the court jurisdiction to grant bail to a person charged with a bailable offence.

“The applicant (Lulu) is charged with manslaughter. This offence is bailable,” Kibatala had told the judge.
