The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) is satisfied with the development of a project to harmonise drug regulatory systems in Africa .

Upon its completion, it will be part of a programme to harmonise regulations on medicine and cosmetics across the continent.

Nepad chief executive officer Ibrahim Mayaki told reporters here that the completion of the project would be in line of projects aimed at promoting people’s health.

“Methods and systems of regulating products will be the same in African countries to guarantee better health” he said. “The flooding of counterfeit drugs will also be reduced.”

Dr Mayaki said such objectives could be reached through a sound human resource management.According to Dr Mayaki, development of such institutions needed strong leadership. He said the availability of human resource and reputable leadership needed a conducive environment to carry out projects and meet objectives.

He also spoke of the importance of regional economic integrations to empower Africa to enable it to compete with other continents.

TFDA director general Hiiti Sillo said findings from an evaluations had shown that African countries were facing a challenge of human resource management in implementing food and drug projects.

.According to him, the taken initiatives will strengthen political and economic integration efforts in the region through the East African Community and the South African Development Community.“Since one of the region’s economic strategy is the common market, the initiative will help us to achieve the goals” he said.
