POLICE are holding five suspects over the theft of five computers and a printer stolen at the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Company (DAWASCO) offices at Magomeni Mapipa area in the city on Tuesday night.

Kinondoni Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Charles Kenyela, told a press conference in the city that the suspects are security guards working with Southern Security Guard Company, saying the guards committed the crime with the help of outsiders.

“After committing the crime, the security guards abandoned a shotgun with registration number TZ CAR 35438/51153 and their uniforms,” said the RPC. He named the suspects as Innocent Enock (24) and Shabani Ramadhani (21), both of Keko as well as Haji Shilole (24), Shabani Juma (25) and Juma Nyasari (29), of Mbagala.

“The police force recovered the stolen property from the suspects who admitted to committing the said crime,” he said. In a separate development, Mr Kenyela said police arrested 72 suspects over sabotage of water infrastructures following a crackdown in Kinondoni Municipality.

He pointed out that the suspects were found in possession of 86 water pumps, 19 water meters, saying police also impounded 19 tankers with water believed to have been collected illegally. “The operation was jointly carried out by police force and the DAWASCO at Magomeni Makuti, Mwananyamala and Mikocheni areas,” he said.

He said following the arrest some parts of the city which were experiencing water shortage have started getting water, saying the police force has filed charges on water theft and sabotage of infrastructure.
