ARUSHA: Ten city officials held over ghost employees
BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER.
The Arusha office of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) has arrested ten Arusha City Council officials for allegedly creating ghost civil servants and pocketing their salaries.
It was however revealed by sources serving at the court where the suspects were to appear yesterday that the court refused to accept the charge sheet because of improper filling of the charge sheet.
The suspects were expected to appear before the Arusha Resident Magistrate Court yesterday but in an unprecedented move, the PCCB charge sheet was suspended for minor corrections.
“The court refused to accept the charge sheet prepared by PCCB and asked the PCCB officials to go back and prepare another charge sheet that will be acceptable by the court,” the source revealed.
Arusha regional PCCB commander, Mbengwa Kasomambutu, admitted to having sent the suspects to court to no avail.
“We didn’t read their charge sheet on the ghost employees and their salaries,” he said.
He however did admit that there are some technical problems with the charge sheet asserting that they are expediting the corrections ahead of re-sending them to court.
He declined to disclose the suspects’ names but he did hint that they are mostly from the Health and Education departments.
